Ag Management
The Washington County FFA Chapter participated in the North Central District Farm Management competition in Concordia on March 10. The Farm Management Career Development Event provides competition that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to successfully manage a farm or pursue agribusiness management careers. This event enhances and encourages opportunities for all participants to receive instruction that develops farm business management skills.
As a team, WCHS placed first in the district with a score of 570. The team was led by the following members and their achievements during the contest: Christopher Wright, First Place Overall, Samantha Wright, Second Place Overall, Hunter Johnson, Third Place Overall, Gabryelle Gilliam, Fourth Place Individual, and Caitlin Duey, Seventh Place Overall. Other team individual was Madison Stone finishing just out of the top ten.
As a team, WCHS placed first in the district with a score of 570. Agronomy |
Members of the Washington County FFA Chapter competed in the North Central District Agronomy career development event in Concordia on March 10. The event consists of five categories: grain grading, seed analysis, an agronomic quiz, Agronomy laboratory activities, and plant and seed identification. The competition tests the student’s abilities to grade grain quality, determine seed and weed contaminants in common crops, and recognize plants and seeds of more than 100 varieties of crops and weeds associated with Kansas agriculture. The agronomic quiz features questions dealing with growth and development of certain types of crops. The lab activity presents problems dealing with fertilizers, pesticides and chemicals, soil survey mapping, nutrient deficiencies, plant injury, and various troubleshooting activities associated with plant health.

Other team individuals finishing the day just out of the top ten were Andrea L’Ecuyer, Scuyler Zenger, Riley Moore, and Laramie Moyer.

Veterinary Science
On March 27th, the Washington County FFA Chapter participated in the North Central District Veterinary Science Career Development Event in Concordia, Kansas. The event was designed to provide opportunities to development technical knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in the field of veterinary science. Students were tested on their competency with large and small animals in the areas of anatomy and physiology, health and safety, medical terminology, clinical procedures, math and dosage calculations, handling and restraining animals, and identification of breeds of dogs, cats, pet birds, reptiles, rabbits, small mammals, chickens, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, pigs, parasites, tools and veterinary equipment.
The Washington County FFA students finished as the 1st place team in the competition with Noah Goodwin, leading the team as the 3rd place individual in the event. Laramie Moyer placed 4th, Addison Mann placed 5th, with Camryn Boykin trailing not to far behind. This was the 2nd year in a row that Washington County has brought home the championship team title.
This same team has gone on to compete at the state contest that was won by our national team last year.

Nursery Landscape
Members of the Washington County FFA participated in the Nursery/Landscape career development event in Clay Center on April 20th. In the Nursery Landscape Competition, each student completed an exam dealing with general knowledge of the horticulture industry, nursery production practices, landscape design and maintenance. Students were also tested on their ability to identify a variety of turf grasses, groundcovers and vines, shrubs, trees, bulb plants and perennials, insects, diseases, weeds, plant disorders and tools associated with the horticulture industry.
The Washington County FFA team placed first in the overall contest with a score of 923. Andrea L’Ecuyer finished as the 1st place individual, Christopher Wright placed 2nd individually, Scott Romeiser finished in 5th place and Ryan Nelson rounded out the team with a 7th place finish.

Floriculture
Members of the Washington County FFA participated in the Floriculture career development event in Clay Center on April 20th. The Floriculture Career Development event consisted of identifying a variety of common houseplants, bedding plants, florist crops and foliage plants. Each member completed a 50 question exam over the general knowledge of the horticulture industry, greenhouse production practices and floral design. Students evaluated floral arrangements, bedding plants, potting mums, and greenhouse production systems including irrigation, fertilization, pest management and containers.
Washington County placed First as a team in the overall contest with a score of 769. The team was led by Caitlin Duey who finished as the Overall High Individual. Her teammates nipped at her heels with Whitney Wyatt finishing in 2nd Place, Taylor Powell in 7th Place, and Konnor Penning in 10th place. Tess Cecrle was the last member of the team.

Livestock
The Livestock Judging Team from WCHS competed in the North Central District Contest in Clay Center on Monday, April 20, 2015. The event was conducted by the Clay Center FFA and was officiated by the Kansas State University Livestock Judging Team. Over 20 different schools throughout the state and district participated. The event consisted of three classes of cattle, two hog classes, two classes of sheep and goats, three sets of reasons and a livestock management and general knowledge exam. Levi Gauby led the Senior Team as the overall high individual in the contest. Neal Ehler finished in 9th place and rounded out our Senior Team. In addition to the district contest, the contest in Clay Center was opened up as an invitational allowing two of the previous year’s National Livestock participants to judge. Ty Stewart finished as the overall high individual in the invitation, which includes participants from the North Central District and additional schools. Levi Gauby finished 4th in the invitational and Wyatt Durst finished in 9th Place. Wyatt Durst was given an additional award being recognized as the overall high reasons score. In the Greenhand Division, Scuyler Zenger came in 3rd place overall. The rest of the Greenhand Livestock Judging Team was Brody Stamm, Laramie Moyer, Tori Zabokrtsky, and Aundrea Bruna. |
